WebGL Multiplayer Project Made In Unity
- January 4, 2025
Unity (URP), WebGL
Eris Online is a large-scale multiplayer online role-playing game developed in Unity using the Universal Render Pipeline (URP). The project aims to revive and evolve early 2000s classic MMOs, blending nostalgia with modern gameplay.
As the project grew, I shifted from designing environments and levels to supporting overall art direction, with a focus on the technical side.
Art Direction
I developed a visual style inspired by the realism of early 2000s MMOs - a style once seen as realistic, but now perceived as stylized. I contributed 3D character models and designs in this direction, focusing on a dark fantasy tone that avoids modern hyper-realism. The goal is to evoke a sense of nostalgia while balancing present-day design trends and stay within the limits of WebGL and low-end hardware.

Terrain Workflow & Tools
To support large-scale worldbuilding, I developed a procedural terrain generation workflow using World Machine. I generated heightmaps and splatmaps, split them into chunks, and used Unity’s terrain tools to construct the environment. This workflow was designed to make future updates and modifications more efficient.
I also implemented object painting tool to help with level design.

Large structures were visually integrated using custom decals to ensure consistency across the environment.
UI Design
I designed the game’s interface by blending early 2000s dark fantasy themes with modern minimalism. The goal was to stay true to the game’s art direction while aligning with modern browser aesthetics.

The project is still under development, and the demo can be visited at https://demo.erismmo.com
